| | Escher String Quartet CENTER DEBUT Sat, September 27, 2008 Samueli Theater | 8pm "The group combined ripe tonal balances with the kind of heedless intensity that comes with youth." — SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE Formed in 2005, the quartet takes its name from the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, whose images feature individual components interplaying to form a larger complex whole. The same can be said for this ensemble, mentored by the renowned Emerson String Quartet, which has earned acclaim for its individual sound as well as its unique cohesiveness. | Guarneri String Quartet and Johannes String Quartet Wed, November 19, 2008 Samueli Theater | 8pm The Guarneri String Quartet is one of today's most venerable ensembles. In addition to mastering the finest works in the traditional quartet repertoire, the Guarneri is committed to works by today’s foremost composers. For its Center concert, part of its farewell season, it will be joined by the Johannes String Quartet, an ensemble comprised of top-notch orchestra musicians who take time from their busy careers to pursue a love of the string quartet literature.
